Marshall Rogers Jan.22, 1950 - March 25, 2007 I didn't read about it until moments ago, but comics artist Marshall Rogers died Monday at the mere age of 57. (Having checked, I see that Mark posted this earlier today, too, and chose a better Rogers Detective cover than I did.) via CBG : Batman artist Marshall Rogers has died at age 57. DC Comics announced his passing Monday, with President and Publisher Paul Levitz calling him "one of the radical young stylists bringing new looks to DC in the '70s." Levitz also stated, "His debonair smile and charm were every bit as endearing as his art was energetic, and his colleagues at DC are all shocked to have a great artist pass so young." Rogers is perhaps best known for his work on Batman with writer Steve Englehart. Rogers' work first appeared in Detective Comics , in a backup story. He later moved to pencilling the lead stories in that title, working with Englehart and inker Terry Austin. This included t...

Frommmmmmmmm Spaaaaace Advance looks at a few of the cosmic beings coming from Heroclix later this year. ( edit 3/28 - slightly different angle of the Surfer added.) The following are pics from the Vegas trade show that were passed along today. (Click on each for a much larger view.) These are all early mock-ups, not the finished products. Here's the repaint of Galactus, holding the new Silver Surfer LE that'll be the first of the tournament participation prizes in July's Coming of Galactus tournament run. Here's a slightly different angle on the Surfer, though not revealing much more detail -- we really need to see it from his right side and/or from a downward angle, but in this shot it's looking a little more like the Nullifier, and the rest of what I was taking as a mini bazooka-like weapon actually just his arm, elbow and forearm held high. What confused me earlier, it seems, was the way some of the highlights/reflections off the Surfer are blue; that flash ...

Protected! (or Safe Sells! ) I wanted to quickly share how the U.S. editions of Time & Newseek vary from what they're saying to the rest of the world , at least as far as selling points on the cover. The stories are still in each edition, but it's interesting what they decided to use as selling points here. Do they believe we've just become so jaded and desensitized to the wars that we'd either ignore or be turned off by those stories? All of it's at least still a step above cover stories about celebrities adopting children from outside the U.S. and their own ethnicities.

In a dark future... I'm still waiting for a brick of Origin. I had been waiting for two bricks of Origin from Gathering Ground since the set's release March 7th, but this past Monday I received a note from Brandon D. at that operation, telling me that they were "very, very, very sorry" but that they were ultimately unable to obtain the cases they'd ordered. My money was being refunded. So, I hit a bookmarked ebay sale for bricks at what was essentially the same price... and realized this was actually a good opportunity. Sure, this is the longest I've waited after a set's release to reach a resting point on a set, but the delay helped me see that three bricks plus the loose ones I'd gotten would be overkill. Sure, just one more brick will not finish out Origin completely for me, but two would almost certainly bury me in far more extras than I'd want. So, I just ordered one more on Monday. Anyway, I was hoping it would hit here by today (seller sai...
Rats, Cats, it works on lots of things. They've isolated a rat poison in the tainted Canadian cat food that was the end of week alert a week ago.

Things to come. I've been busy between home and work, the resulting silence extending from blog posts to comments on others' blogs and to anything resembling correspondence. I'm taking a little break now both because I need one and because so much information's coming through this week. It's been a rollercoaster of revelations for fans of Wizkids' Heroclix since around 10pm Eastern Tuesday night, when a simultaneous blast of information was being given to retailers at a trade show in Las Vegas and to all of the fans online. Because it's a decent - if self-serving and definitely ad-speak, some of it bordering on Stan Lee-isms - summary of what's coming up, I'm lifting the following from something posted to Wizard magazine's site . I'll add any comments or expansions of my own in green. After this line if it's not in green, I didn't write it: REVISED RARITY With its upcoming sets, WizKids is reworking the rarity model of the figures...
Pet Food Alert I just read of a recall alert for cat and dog foods covering a huge sweep of brand names . Kidney failure and 10 deaths attributed to it so far. Please spread the word to other dog & cat owners. As it turns out I have a flat-pack case of one of the affected brand names here. (Edit: Two days later I finally look around and see that Tammy'd posted a notice on Friday .) This is one helluva way to suddenly break over a week of blog silence, but at least it's for something worthwhile. Important info from the article: Below are lists of specific brands recalled by Menu Foods, in addition to Proctor & Gamble's recall of certain Iams and Eukanuba products. Menu Brands lists the brands on its Web site, www.menufoods.com, and advises consumers to call 1-866-895-2708 for more information. Recalled cat foods Americas Choice; Preferred Pets; Authority; Best Choice; Companion; Compliments; Demoulas Market Basket; Fine Feline Cat, Shep Dog; Food Lion; Foodtown; Gia...

A splash of Origin Origin released today. I broke down and bought six boosters while waiting for pre-ordered items to arrive: Blackhawks R (The ears, man! The ears !) Robotman E Ray R Halo E Mano R Shadow Thief R Knockout R & E Copperhead R (x2) Question R & E Animal Man E All-New Atom R (x2) Mirror Master R (Looking forward to the E & V, which are transporters.) Triplicate Girl E Hawkman V (Looks great, and I appreciate the work that went into the plastic shell that enabled him to be packed with his wings attached.) Wonder Girl E & V Steel R Martian Manhunter E (Pudgy, pillowy and with mis-proportioned limbs, but I do like how the experienced has the pointed, elongated head.) Starman U Mr. Mind U (Honestly, while the lid was level and it's all clean and orderly, the sculpt is still... I don't know. "Stupid ugly" seems terribly apt.) President Horne Sarge Steel Critical Strike Protect The Innocent Coordination Pounce None of the four chase pieces (...

I don't think this info is from the Deep Throat Woodward & Bernstein used... A quick tale of an ill-chosen graphic by a Georgia news team . It's one of those Friday items to compare one's workplace mistakes with and probably come out a winner.
