2009: Day 202

Robber and outlaw of the American West, Sam Bass was born today in 1851. It seems to be a day for Wild West types, including train robbers as you'll see.

The stuff of legends. On this date in 1865, in the market square of Springfield, Missouri, Wild Bill Hickok shoots and kills Davis Tutt in what would become the template for the western shootout/showdown.

A day for Western legends, on this date in 1873 Jesse James and the James-Younger gang manage the first successful train robbery of the American West.

Sounding more like a forgotten '60s band than anything else, on this date in 1919 the Wingfoot Air Express, a dirigible, crashed into the Illinois Trust and Savings Building in Chicago. Twelve people (mostly bank employees) died in the crash, with one more - one of those who'd parachuted from the wrecked dirigible and broke both legs - dying later while in
hospital.

Lost Generation writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway was born today in 1899.

Mollie Sugden, the English comedic actress known primarily from her role as Mrs. Slocombe in the series Are You Being Served? (and who died less than three weeks ago) would have turned 87 today.

Don Knotts was born on this date in 1924. Good work, Barn'.

Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno turns 71 today.

Whitewater investigation weenie Kenneth Starr turns 63 today. Find a scandal today, any scandal, at all costs. Some of his latest work involves defending Blackwater and representing the Proposition 8 supporters who want to have the same sex marriages performed pre-Prop 8 invalidated. A weenie supreme!

Doonesbury's Garry Trudeau turns 61 today. Also marking the same birthday is singer-songwriter and musician Cat Stevens, born Steven Demetre Georgiou and, following his conversion to Islam, Yusuf Islam.

One hit wonder Taco, the Dutch singer who is known for his 1982 cover of Irving Berlin's "Puttin' On the Ritz", has a 54th birthday today.

Actor/comedian Jon Lovitz turns 52 today.

Forty years ago today Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first men to walk on the Moon.

Actress Jaime Murray, who so far I really only know via her character of Lila from the second season of Dexter (another series I'm looking forward to resuming - in this case it'll be September 27) turns 32 today.

Actor John Hartnett turns 31 today.

Score some mystic weed from actor Jamie Waylett today -- it's his 20th birthday.
