Ah, the vultures, the vultures...

An email from I'm a Crypt Leak, alerted me to an aborted, satyrical eBay auction of a crucifix (sic -- a crucifix has a figure of Jesus on it, while this was simply a cross) made of two feedling tubes. It was put up under the banner "Terri Schiavo Feeding Tube Crucifix - Never Forget". That it was a hasty photo-edit rotate and stamp operation using a shot of a feeding tube was a give-away that it was a joke, and the text of the ad drove it home, still... it led me to look for other people trying to make something off the event and Terri Schiavo's name.

There's someone attempting to sell the domain name for TerriSchiavoFund.com to rally support (and contributions) for whichever side of the issue you're on. Like an arms dealer, he doesn't care which side uses it. I'm encouraged that there are no bids as yet. Then there are the "Justice for Terri" buttons and magnets. Then there's a clever attempt to drag the Pope into it. Perhaps more creative is the guy using Terri Schiavo's name to sell postal covers of St. Theresa. The same guy is also selling more direct commemorative ones. I'll give him some credit for having them ready so he could get out to the post office the day she died and make sure they were stamped for that day. Not much, but some.

Another domain name is up for sale now, Terrisgift.com, by someone who's claiming to be the mother of "3 disabled adult children" and is being offered as a "right to life domain name." She's attempting to draw in the bids by mentioning that she uses her ebay sales to help support her autistic son.

Perhaps the most hideous of the lot are the Terri Schiavo cufflinks, which I couldn't help but show here. These are crying out to Terry Gilliam to get a serious snootful and animate as a duet in song. I have to wonder about anyone who would not only come up with this but save the image file as "terri schiavo in heaven above cufflinks.jpg" Are there to be other varieties of Terri cufflinks? More from this same "artist", Gourdji: "Terri Schiavo as Joan of Arc" bracelet. It uses the same image as the cufflinks. Ghastly items.

Aside from all that it's mostly Florida newspapers and national magazines with "Terri" cover stories up for sale. It's a natural enough impulse to profiteer, but what kills me is when they pretend to be reverent about it.

It'll probably be worth running "Schiavo" through the eBay search engine a few more times in the coming week... not to mention John Paul II, once he lets go.

Okay, I couldn't let this one go without noticing: "Johnny Cochran & Terri Schiavo with JESUS in Heaven!!!" which I also couldn't help but share here. I hadn't realized Johnnie's left hand was so much smaller than his right, but then again I'm fairly sure all three had noses, so we'll just write it off to artistic license.

I don't know if we're going to be able to top that one, but I'm open to suggestions.
