Will we ever watch The Watchmen?

Another high-profile director has been attached as director for The Watchmen. Work on a screen adaptation of the 1986 Alan Moore/ Dave Gibbons miniseries has been floating around since 1989 as an "upcoming" project, with a Sam Hamm script from that era likely still floating around on the net. (I know I have a print copy of it stored away somewhere.) Early on it was linked to Terry Gilliam, but has officially and unofficially switched hands over the years. Adapting the dense, 12-issue miniseries into a roughly 2 hour screenplay has often caused me to think it was better off not being made -- far better that it would be optioned for development as a miniseries on HBO or SHOWTIME. Still, as noted in the article, a target of 2006 is currently on the schedule.
