Mix Tape 11/23/06

Tammy's done a few of these, usually for someone specific, but I'm doing this one for myself. These are all songs I've found myself listening to, at one time or other, back to back several times in a row.

I'll kick it off with the theme song from the latest Bond Film, Casino Royale, "You Know My Name" which continues to grow on me.

Then I'll go for one of the most underrated musicians operating out there today -- Ben Folds. Ignore the video and just listen to the song. "Best Imitation of Myself"

A bit of fun pop from a band that may as well have been cursed for all they were taken for and the way the principle members ended up, it's Badfinger.

On to something just as pop but far, far more recent, it's Fountains of Wayne and "Mexican Wine." (No, I will not link to "Stacey's Mom")

Just to emphasize that I'm an old fart I'll reach back for one from The Monkees.

One of oh-so-many Elvis Costello songs I find myself listening to: "The Other Side of Summer"

One of my favorite REM songs, "So. Central Rain."

Someone decided to run the Talking Heads' "And She Was" to clips from Fruits Basket -- hey, whatever works. I'm just here for the recording.

One of many songs from Squeeze that seldom fails to pick me up a little. Ignore the lip-synchers & lowsy video and just dig the song.

Why not get some They Might Be Giants in here? "Birdhouse In Your Soul"

That was quick, so why not one more from the band before we move on?

Okay, it's Elvis Costello again, this time with a song Crypt Leak and I listened to almost too many times back in the day -- when Elvis was pumping out albums full of fairly short, catchy songs and didn't print lyrics sheets in his albums. This one's "New Amsterdam"

Far from their best song, but one I find myself shuffling into the mix, it's Queen's "Friends Will Be Friends"

I'm not getting through this without something from Stevie Wonder. I'd prefer a studio version, but we takes what we can gets...

Someone decided to put Peter Gabriel's "Rhythm of the Heat" to scenes from Princess Mononoke, which feels somewhat forced, but - once more - I'm here for the music.

Finally, a sappy but touching song from, Ben Folds. I didn't want to go with one of the live versions uploaded so this one's the studio track accompanying someone's photo album. It's "The Luckiest"

...and that's all I'm in the mood to dig up and string together now. Besides, I want to post it so I can listen to them again.

I absolutely LOVE the video for "Daydream Believer". Yeah, okay, I like the song, too, but the clip is adorable!!

Badfinger? BADFINGER? Yeah, me, too.

LOVE "New Amsterdam". The clip didn't do much for me, but it was nice to hear.

Nice that you've got all the songs in one place. Now all you've got to do is remember the post date and you're golden.

The "Daydream Believer" video was a nice set of touches, yeah.

I'm fine with being a fan of four or five Badfinger songs. They had solid popular success but appear to have been taken in every business deal they ever signed. They're music was being played everywhere so people kept thinking they were obviously both successful and wealthy from it. Two of them ended up hanging themselves, though roughly 8 years apart. Whether or not listening to an entire Blue Oyster Cult album was what drove either man to his death is pure speculation... ;)

Oh, definitely, this wasn't approached with anything like a "best video" mentality. I was just going for the songs. If I was going for videos I would've picked a different Costello song and I'd probably have two or three others from Peter Gabriel, too, with his own, imaginative videos.

Making a mix is interesting as something of a mental snapshot, as I know that a week from now (if not much sooner) there will be songs on here I won't be in the mood to listen to again for a while. Still, they'll come around again.

You certainly can never have too much TMBG.

I agree with your choices, although I do have to say that I found "Stacy's Mom" a pretty catchy song. Maybe just me.

I liked Stacy's Mom, too, just not as much as some, it seems. It was so (relatively) over-played that I believe it's the only FoW song that many people know. Just do a FoW search on YouTube and you'll find how ridiculously over-represented it is there.

I have several of their albums and wanted to pick something else. Plus, Stacy's Mom has never been a favorite for me. I tend to skip the track when it comes up.
