Out of Sight Smokes

If you really needed another reason to quit...

now it's largely confirmed that smoking nearly doubles the risk of blindness later in life. (Thanks to Crypt Leak for this one.)

Won't
Change
A
Thing.

My brother knows this stuff is coating his lungs and has been for the past 31 years. He figures his periodic light exercise and pretending he'll quit someday compensate.

Our grandmother died of lung cancer. Our aunt died of emphysema. His girlfriend's dad is slowly dying of emphysema. Doesn't give him pause.

Well, maybe he pauses. Then he flicks his lighter and sucks on another coffin nail.

Right. Reason doesn't touch the true addict until they truly think it's nearly too late.., and even then many will use that sense of Cruel Fate as a reason to continue enjoying their addiction.

I had a family history of cancer and had watched a next-door neighbor (in a duplex we shared) slowly die of emphysema (continuing to smoke while on oxygen...that's determination!), and while all of that was hard to watch...it didn't get me to quit my nicotine habit. Nothing did until it got entirely more personal. When I heard the words "hypertension" and "risk of stroke" being directed at ME!!!!, I gave them up that day...after an 18 year addiction. I had tried to quit MANY times prior, but it never really hit me until it became very, very personal. Don't imagine that's the case for everyone, as that still doesn't phase some. But it sure did me. Maybe this news story will help someone. Hope so.
