A few days ago Wizard made a special subsciption offer which involved a special Batman clix. Today they revealed its dial and stats.
Well, if you ever wondered what a dial for a Batman who's high looks like, now's your chance.
The sculpt is nice, but the dial has me dubbing this "Beefwit Batman." No Range, not a speck of Leap/Climb... sure, he can hide on hindering terrain, but when he goes to move off it he's at half speed. Not even a single click of Outwit, and by the time he gets even close combat Incapacitate, his attack value drops almost immediately to 7.
Charge is combined with Close Combat Expert, which don't mix, and then as soon as Charge disappears he gets Exploit Weakness... which would mix with Charge... if it weren't gone. Yes, he has Super Senses, but he doesn't get them until his second click -- okay, I can at least understand that a little, as something's happened to put him on guard... even though an opening hit it's likely to blow him well past that second click...
The late-dial Plasticity doesn't bother me in principle -- this is plainly a close combat Batman, and he would have control over a battle even when he's getting tired; if an opponent didn't want to get away, he'd find it difficult, but if Batman wanted to break away he'd find it much easier. Besides, yeah, the perfect time to hold on and keep someone from breaking away from you is when you have a scary Defense of 14 or lower. Yeah, that'll show 'em. Force opponents to stand there and beat you unconscious.
Even if he does decide to move away, he won't move well, though with that lack of Leap/Climb. And, beyond all that, as bad as Incapacitate with no Range is it's even worse when it 's mostly there with an AV of 7.
I'd be tempted to find an appropriately-sized Bullwinkle J. Moose and replace the sculpt with that. It's almost a bumbling piece, with the only finesse elements being the perma-stealth of the Batman Ally Team Ability and the clicks of Super Senses. Aside from that, he's almost a stumblebum. Would I ever want to play this version? Possibly, but it would be more for the challenge of it than because it was a good piece.
Honestly, I'm not complaining. I'm just enumerating the shortfalls. This makes skipping the magazine subscription & Batman clix offer all that much easier.
There's little here I really want in a clix piece in this combination, leaving the interest in the piece leaning on this sculpt and the collectibility/trade value. I generally don't bother with Wizard magazine -- the past couple issues I've bought have been because of clix mail-away offers -- but it's the only magazine offered I've any reason to get... and then these cost $7 each on top of that? No. I'll pass.
