Noble Fight or Misplaced Obsession?
Does it really matter? Regardless of one's view of the show, fan efforts to directly fund a sixth season of Star Trek: Enterprise demonstrate strong support. The general overview of their efforts is found at the link above (it goes to saveneterprise.com), including a link to the fundraising wing of the group at Trek United. Thanks to Dwight for the site note, btw. As he mentioned in his comments following an earlier post, the official contributions have reportedly grown considerably today, and someone who truly does need to get a life has reportedly been hacking the site.
When I could get through I saw that the official contributions were just a bit beyond $3, 067,860.00, with a separate link announcing that today the $3 million portion arrived via a contribution from anonymous investors in the commercial space flight industry. (Note: They make a point that "if no agreement can be made, you will be refunded," which is a good sign. Still, there are notes regarding 5% taken by "PayPal/the bank", which could be of some concern since any contributions made via PayPal using a credit card/"instant pay" option will be hit for fees heading to the fund, and if they end up refunding money the same way it's like certain to take the same hit. For their sake I hope the three anonymous people behind the $3 million contribution found a less taxing way of transferring it.)
They won't see a direct dime from me, but I nonetheless applaud the fervor of the show's fans. I'll be interested to see how far this goes. How large will the pot have to grow before Paramount decides to go for it? Consider that the main offer on the table is all Paramount/Viacom has to do is say they'll continue production on more episodes and they can take the money with no further strings attached. A huge amount of free publicity and a pile of cash..? They could go for it.
