Now, how many lives did these moves cost?

It's come to light that the Bush administration passed up several opportunities to take out Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his terrorist organization in 2002 and 2003... because they were afraid nullifying them would weaken their case for plunging us into the protracted debacle in Iraq.

I don't have the text handy, but I did catch enough of his ramble at the U.N. today to hear something that is almost certain to come back as a nasty soundbyte in years to come, as he professed that the nation that will form in Iraq as a result of this invasion and occupation will never be a threat to the world... Okay, I found it:

"Today, the Iraqi and Afghan people are on the path to democracy and
freedom. The governments that are rising will pose no threat to others."

Yeah, that's the one that's bound to come back with sharp teeth. In a part of the world where fundamentalist Islamic clerics are one of the few constant forces seeking some type of full, social order, it's more than a little dangerous to presume to just "give" a war-weary, shell-shocked group of people the abstract of Liberty and push them towards democracy.

Nothing new in any of that. It still galls me, though, how many generations here and there will have to pay for the moronic maneuvers of the Dubya regime.

People, we cannot get this man out of office quickly and thoroughly enough to save us from much grief to come, but November 2nd is our best - our only - shot. Make sure you're registered. Make sure your family and friends are registered. Well, maybe not that uncle who listens to Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly all the time...
